LAANNA SCRIPTFont DesignVasa/Finland, 2018In 2016, traditional cursive handwriting has been taken out of the curriculum for primary school children in Finland. Children are still taught how to print handwrite, however, more time has been allocated to learn how to touch-type and text message. The Finish Board of Education considers typing to be an important national competence and more relevant to the current everyday life than cursive writing. Typography constitutes the link between handwriting and typewriting. Fonts are designed by a human hand in a process of countless decisions. To embrace the accidental, random, casual, functional, sometimes careless, and sometimes carefully posted expression of an individual, the artists immortalized the personal fonts and to that end made it accessible as well as usable for everyone via web.During an Artist Residency in the city of Vasa, Finland, my collaborator Paloma Sanchez-Palencia and I noticed the large amount of handwritten signs all over the city. We started to get to know the people behind the handwriting in order to create a digital font based on the found notes. Laanna Script is the first font of the series.
